Wildflowers Perth
07/09/2017 Tim Casey

Spring has sprung, and so have the Wildflowers of Western Australia. Now is the perfect time to think about planning a trip to see the beautiful variety of Wildflowers WA has to offer. With the recent sunshine, the northern regions have started to bloom, and we have had good reports from the road. In particular our passengers were lucky enough to see the elusive Wreath Leschenaultia on our first Northern Wildflower tour in the region surrounding Pindar. From the road our botanical guide, Ann Newman has been reporting a wonderful array of flowers including; GelezowiaVerrucosa, Donkey Orchids, Wilson’s Grevillea, Spreading Cone Flowers and many more varieties.

As the season progresses we will see the regions in bloom start to slowly make their way southward, the season starts north in late August, and then moves out into station country towards the end of the month of September, with the great southern and south-west regions capping off the season in late October.

With no shortage of regions to visit, or varieties to see in WA one of the trickiest parts can be identifying what wildflowers you are seeing. With this in mind Casey Australia Tours and Ann Newman worked together this season to publish a guide to help identify wildflowers when you are on tour. The Colour Coded Field Guide of Western Australian Wildflowers is a guide that allows you to quickly look for a matching photograph of wildflowers based on colour, and identify the botanical and common name. The guide also details which regions the varietals are common to, helping with the identification process.

Botanical Guide Ann Newman is extremely passionate about Western Australian Wildflowers, and had been working with plants for more than 40 years. She began her career at the herbarium, then moved into horticulture and cultivating native plants and lecturing on Wildflower cultivation in WA Gardens. She has been conducting Wildflower Tours for over 25 years, and her extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for our flora makes her an exceptional botanical guide. The majority of the images in the guide have been taken by Ann over many years in the field.

While many of our Wildflower Tours are now sold out, we do still have some spaces available on some of our extended and one day Wildflower Tours. Tours depart Perth weekly, from August through to the end of October, heading into different regions of WA from Kalbarri right down to Albany. We also have day tours, leaving each weekend, which can be added onto the end of an extended Wildflower Tour – so you can experience more of what WA has to offer.
