With a population of just over 500,000 and an area of 68,401 km squared, Tasmania is a little island that packs a punch for tourists and locals alike. Hobart
The state’s capital is a beautiful mix of old and new, nestled in the foothills of Mt Wellington. Hobart is Australia’s second oldest capital city, and offers plenty for tourists. The cities buildings are a mixture of heritage sandstone buildings and modern architecture, making for great photo opportunities. Take a stroll along the picturesque waterfront, enjoy a meal at one of the cities exceptional seafood restaurants, or visit the market stalls of the famous Salamanca Market. Port Arthur
Take a step back in time with a visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site. About 1 hour south-east of Hobart, Port Arthur was originally established as a timber station, but was then morphed into a penal colony where thousands of convicts were housed between 1830 and 1877. Today the site allows visitors to experience a glimpse into the past and walk through the buildings and ruins. Entry to the site is valid for two days and includes: a guided tour which delves into the hardships experienced by the convicts during this era, a harbour cruise, and entry to the onsite museums and galleries.
Go Wild
Tasmania’s National Parks are well known for their lush natural landscape and hiking trails, so make sure you don’t forget to leave time for nature in any itinerary. There is so much wilderness to explore, with over 40 per cent of the island protected in national parks and reserves. Some of the iconic spots to be sure to include in any visit are: Mt Wellington, Tahune Forest, Russel Falls, Tasman Arch, Hellyer Gorge to name just a few. Launceston
The second largest city in Tasmania, Launceston is packed full of charm. One of Australia’s oldest cities, the city boasts elegant Colonial and Victorian architecture. The city blends urban landscapes with nature with many parks and wilderness areas within easy walking distance from the city centre. This area of Tasmania is also a good jumping off point for exploring the Tasmanian Wine region, which is to the north of the city. The cool climate is perfect for producing grapes, with some of the main varietals of the region including: Reisling, Chardonnay, Savignon Blanc, Cabernet Savingnon, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer all produced on the island.
