Spectacular Wildflowers Of Western Australia

Spectacular Wildflowers Of Western Australia
07/06/2017 Tim Casey

There are so many amazing sights in Western Australia but the incredible array of wildflowers truly stands out. Every year people flock to WA to witness this colourful display, starting in late August in the northern regions of the state and ending in late October/early November in the South. With over 12,000 species of wildflowers in WA, there is no shortage of colour and variety.

Today, we’ll be talking about what you can expect when visiting during wildflower season in Western Australia.

An explosion of colour

Every year, WA explodes into colour with vibrant wildflower displays across the State. When it comes to the best spots, it can be difficult to narrow things down given the vast size of WA and the volume of species present. In fact, 2016 saw one of the best wildflower seasons in recent times thanks to optimal climate and conditions in the lead up to the season.

Narrowing things down can be easier if you know what you are looking for, the north of the state is known for it’s spectacular displays of fields of everlastings, whereas the Southern regions offer an amazing array of orchids and tree flowers . Alternatively if you don’t want to travel too far, the Perth Hills and surrounding area are easily accessible through day trips and provide a wealth of floral displays.

Some of the best-known wildflowers on display in WA include: red and green kangaroo paws with their bold, distinctive flowers, stunning white, yellow and pink everlastings, colourful orchids and lilies, and bright banksias and grevilleas. When visiting wildflower rich areas, make sure you take the time to look at the small details of the flowers. Often there are multiples species of flowers in the one area and don’t judge too quickly, a relatively plain looking flower can have intricate and beautiful details. It goes without saying that you should bring your camera along!

Making the most of your experience

One of the best ways to truly experience the wildflowers that WA has to offer is to look for a tour which includes a botanical guide who can both lead you to the best spots to see the wildflowers and give you insight into the various species on display. Although it’s relatively easy to come across wildflowers when you’re travelling in WA during the right season, having an expert on board can make all the difference and also means you can take in other sights while you’re at it.
