Itinerary Details

4 Day Albany – Lighting the Sound

A major outdoor light experience produced and delivered by FORM Building a State of Creativity in conjunction with internationally renowned Finnish artist, Kari Kola. Visible from key locations around Albany, the dramatic illumination of the landforms in and around King George’s Sound, will divert eyes and attention outward from the coast towards the life-giving source of the ocean, the focus of so much ancestral, cultural, ecological and historical meaning.

Kari Kola is renowned for his lighting treatments of natural and humanmade phenomena, notably the Connemara Mountains (Ireland), and Stonehenge (UK). Lighting the Sound is the first opportunity to see his work in Australia.

Day 1

(MD, Motel) Down Albany Highway to Kojonup for lunch and a visit to Kodja Place. Kodja Place tells the inside story of Australian country life in ways that will move and delight you. Voices, photographs, art and objects from Kojonup’s Noongar-Aboriginal and settler cultures are woven together in imaginative and richly-layered interpretations. Into Albany for three nights.

Day 2

(FB, MD, Motel) A full morning taking in the sites and attractions of Albany and King George Sound. Including the Museum of the Great Southern, Convict Gaol Museum and Brig Amity. After lunch in town back to the motel to rest and freshen up. After dinner we head out to engage with “Lighting the Sound”, symbolising the meaningful co-creation of the Menang and broader Albany communities with an artist of international calibre, it is anticipated to be the largest light installation on Earth in history.

Day 3

(FB, MD, Motel) Spending the morning out in the Torndirrup National Park, visit the redeveloped Gap & Natural Bridge. Onto the Historic Whaling Station, Australian Wildlife Park & Regional Wildflower Garden. Finishing off our stay in Albany overlooking the harbour and ocean from the Summit of Mount Clarence.

Day 4

(FB) Returning to Perth along the route of the Great Southern Railway, now the Great Southern Highway through Katanning, Wagin & Narrogin.
