Itinerary Details

Day 1

(MD, Motel) Flying over the Murchison and Gascoyne into Karratha. Established on Nickol Bay in 1968 to accommodate the processing and exportation workforce of the Hamersley Iron mining company. Nickol Bay has been the home of the Ngarluma people for thousands of years.

Day 2

(CB, RD, Motel) Over to the east for the morning to visit the first port in the North West Cossack (1863). At the mouth of the Harding River it was critical to the development of the pastoral industry in the region, as well as the port for the Nullagine gold rush of 1878. Visit Wickham, Point Samson and Roebourne before returning to Karratha. In the afternoon we head over to Dampier, the home of the beloved “Red Dog” and out to the North West Shelf Visitors Centre.

Day 3

(CB, PL, MD, Motel) South onto the old Millstream Station which now with the Chichester Range makes up the Millstream Chichester National Park. Throughout the park, permanent pools are fed by springs that draw water from the underground aquifer within porous dolomite rock. We visit Python Pool and Deep Reach Pool with an opportunity for a refreshing swim. Further south we reach the Rio Tinto town of Tom Price, with a population of 3000, the median age of 31 reflects Tom Price’s young family-oriented community.

Day 4

(CB, PL, MD, Motel) WA’s second-largest national park at over 1.5 million acres Karijini National Park was formerly explored and named the Hamersley Range in 1861 by Francis Gregory. 140 years later the landscape has barely changed, we spend the day exploring the park including Weano Gorge, Oxers Lookout, Circular Pool Fern Pool and Fortescue Falls. An evening BBQ in the Bush before returning to Tom Price.

Day 5

(CB, MD, Motel) Skirting along through the spinifex dotted ranges of the Pilbara we hit the Great Northern Highway. Passing by a number of iron ore mine camps we reach Newman, just north of the Tropic of Capricorn and the base for the Mount Whaleback mine.

Day 6

(CB, RD, Motel) Morning Tour of the huge Mount Whaleback Mine, ore was discovered here in 1957 and is still being trained 426km to Port Hedland. In the afternoon we head up the highway through Auski before we leave the Chichester Range and reach the floodplains of the Yule River to return to the Indian Ocean at Port Hedland.

Day 7

(CB, PL, PD, Motel) A relaxing day exploring Marble Bar, we visit the historic buildings and the bar across the Coongan River that gives the town its name. Originally thought to be Marble the bar is made of  Jasper and forms a lovely swimming and picnic spot in the hottest town in Australia. Return to Port Hedland.

Day 8

(CB) We fly out to Perth with the rugged ranges and cool waterholes etched into our memories. As well as a much better understanding of the mining industry of the Pilbara.
