ACCOMMODATION

MEALS

Day 1

(PD, Motel) Landing in Broome we look around the Pearling Capital before heading to the beach to watch the sunset and enjoy a picnic dinner.

Day 2

(FB, PL, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) Out to the Fitzroy River and a cruise in Geikie Gorge, the rangers explain and show the huge amount of water that flows through the river system. This is the last large volume of water we will see until we hit Spencer Gulf at Port Augusta. Camping overnight on the floodplain of the river at Fitzroy Crossing.

Day 3

(CAB, CAD, Camp in Bush) Reaching Halls Creek, which functions as a major hub for the local indigenous population and as a support centre for cattle stations in the area. It is also the Northern end of the Tanami Track. The Tanami Track was cut as a 1000km old stock route to get stock into the Kimberley from the area around Alice Springs. In the afternoon we stop at the Wolfe Creek Crater 875m wide and 60m deep formed when a 50,000t meteorite hit the earth 300,000 year ago.

Day 4

(CAB, PL, RD, Motel) Crossing into the Northern Territory past a number of Aboriginal communities, gold mines and abandoned stations. Completing this remote and stunning track we return to the bitumen and hit the Stuart Highway at Alice Springs.

Day 5

(CAB, RD, Motel) A full day in and around Alice Springs including a visit to the Royal Flying Doctor, after being so remote on the Tanami it’s great to see the RFDS base and the work they do. In the afternoon we visit the Alice Springs Desert Park to get a better understanding of the animals and plants that live in these environments. We have dinner tonight at one of the local clubs. Note: RFDS and desert Park included.

Day 6

(CAB, PD, Motel) We spend the day in and around the West MacDonnell Ranges visiting a number of the gorges and waterholes that have fauna and inhabitants of this harsh region for many years. We enjoy a sunset BBQ dinner in at one of these beautiful outback locations.

Day 7

(CAB, PL, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) Down the Stuart Highway through the Erldunda Range and into South Australia. We have lunch at Marla before getting back on the dirt, this time the Oodnadatta track. The track follows a traditional Aboriginal trading route and along the Track are numerous springs feeding water from the Great Artesian Basin. We spend the night at the Oodnadatta, on the Old Ghan line.

Day 8

(CAB, PL, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) From Oodnadatta to William Creek and on to Marree we are following the Old Ghan line, this section of line was completed in 1891 and ran until 1980 before being superseded by the new line further to the West. This country is now home to herds of feral camels that are decedents of the Afghan Cameleer teams that were turned
out with the arrival of the railways. We stop at the edge of South Lake
Eyre to view the vast plain and reach Marree.

Day 9

(CAB, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) Time to enjoy Marree before heading south to the coal mining town of Leigh Creek where we make for the Flinders Ranges and the Vulkathunha Gammon Ranges National Park. Spending two nights at the Arkaroola Village.

Day 10

(CAB, PL, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) A full day driving, walking and enjoying the roads, tracks and sights of the Flinders Ranges. The night sky out here is as bright as could ever be hoped for.

Day 11

(CAB, PL, MD, Motel) Returning to Leigh Creek and the bitumen we drive south with the rugged ridges of the Flinders on our left with the vast flat plains of the Lake Torrens National Park out the right side of the coach. Reaching Hawker we visit the Wilpena Panorama, a 360o landscape painting of from the highest point of Wilpena Pound, St Mary’s Peak. Returning to the ocean for the first time since Cable Beach we arrive at the top of the Spencers Gulf and Port Augusta.

Day 12

(CB, MD, Motel) We visit the Matthew Flinders Lookout, Flinders sailed up the Gulf in 1802 in search of the Inland Sea on his circumnavigating of Australia. On the Princes Highway we make our way down to Adelaide for our last night.

Day 13

(FB) Free time in the CBD of Adelaide for the morning, such a different landscape to the Tanami Track, MacDonnell Ranges, Ooodnadatta Track & Flinders Ranges. Fly out from Adelaide.
