Day 1

(RD, Motel) Flying into Darwin we meet up with the touring party. Spending the night in Darwin city we go out for a welcome dinner.

Day 2

(CB, RD, Motel) Take the 2.5 hour ferry trip to Bathurst Island and meet your local guide for a journey through the progressive community of Wurrumiyanga. Visit the Culture Museum with its fascinating displays of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi ‘dreamtime’ stories as well as visiting the Mission Precinct with its unique Catholic Church. Hear the colourful history of the early mission days. Enjoy morning tea with the Tiwi ladies who will also perform a smoking ceremony to bless visitors. Drop in to the arts and crafts centres and see where the artists work. You also have the opportunity to purchase Tiwi arts and crafts and screen printed fabrics. Learn some of the complex rituals associated with the Pukumani (burial ceremony) before departing Bathurst Island for Darwin. Note: Cruise and tour included.

Day 3

(CB, CAD, Tent in Nat. Park) Through Humpty Doo we venture out on the Arnhem Highway at the Adelaide River we take a cruise through the river and its wetlands to see the spectacular jumping crocodiles. Entering Kakadu National Park over the South Alligator River to our first camp for this tour inside the National Park. Note: Jumping Croc cruise and park entry included.

Day 4

(CAB, PL, CAD, Tent in Nat. Park) Kakadu National Park is a timeless place, recognised as a global treasure. World Heritage listed for both its environment and the living Aboriginal culture. The oldest rock art in the Park is up to 20,000 years old some recent enough to show European ships. The park is home to around 280 bird and 2000 plant species. We visit a number of art sites and rock formations as well as the town of Jabiru which services the Ranger Uranium Mine, both of which are surrounded by the park.

Day 5

(CAB, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) Still within the park we take a morning cruise on Yellow Water to view some of the 10,000 salt water crocs that inhabit the region and the innumerable other fauna and flora. We leave Kakadu heading south to Katherine, sitting on the Australia Overland Telegraph Line and the Ghan Rail Line. Katherine is a major service centre for the region and home of the RAAF Tindal Base. Note: Boat cruise included.

Day 6

(CAB, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) Enjoy a journey of discovery through the magnificent Nitmiluk Gorge on the Katherine River. On the cruise you will discover the cultural significance of the first two gorges to the traditional landowners – the Jawoyn People. Into Katherine Town for free time and lunch. In the afternoon we head down into the Cutta Cutta Caves; stunning tropical limestone caves with a total length of about 2.5km, about 20% open for us to explore. Note: Cruise and cave entry included.

Day 7

(CAB, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) Heading north we visit Edith Falls, another beautiful example of the power of the top end river carving through the landscape. To Pine Creek where workers on the Telegraph Line in 1871 found gold while sinking telegraph line holes. North of Pine Creek we venture out to the west and reach the winding Daly River to camp.

Day 8

(CAB, PL, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) The Daly River mouths to the ocean in the north west of the NT, draining a large portion of the territory including the Katherine, King Ferguson & Douglas Rivers. We spend a relaxing day around the Daly River, turn down the speed and let the sun pass through the sky in this amazing part of the world.

Day 9

(CAB, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) Back to the Stuart Highway and lunch at Adelaide River, this area played a central role in the defence of Australia during the second world war. At the height of hostilities, there were up to 30,000 Australian Army and United States soldiers based near the town. In the afternoon we pass through Batchelor and into the Litchfield National Park to set up our final camp. Note: Park entry included.

Day 10

(CAB, PL, CAD, Tent in CVan Park) We spend the day visiting the plunging waterfalls, swimming holes, rivers and creeks as well as the Old Blyth Homestead. Built in 1929 she stands as a reminder of the tough conditions faced by the pioneers in remote areas. The park is also famous for the Magnetic Termite Mounds, built by thousands of termites with a north-south orientation to control the temperature inside the mounds.

Day 11

(CAB) Returning to Darwin for our homeward flights after exploring the great natural, cultural and historic features of the Top End.
